When Jesus Calms the Storm… or Calms Us in the Storm

Scripture Focus: Mark 4:35–41

Life has a way of reminding us that we are not in control.

I learned that years ago when my son rode the school bus. We had everything figured out. We knew exactly what time to leave the house, when the bus would arrive, and how our mornings would flow. Then suddenly, the bus driver changed her routine. Some days she came early. Other days she came late. We found ourselves rushing, waiting, wondering, and adjusting.

What once felt predictable became uncertain.

Isn’t that how life often works?

One moment everything seems to be going according to plan. We have our schedules, goals, dreams, and expectations neatly organized. Then without warning, life shifts. A diagnosis. A loss. A disappointment. A strained relationship. A financial setback. A closed door we never expected.

Suddenly, we’re caught in a storm we didn’t see coming.

The disciples understood that feeling.

In Mark 4, Jesus told His disciples, “Let us cross over to the other side.” They obeyed. They got into the boat with Jesus. Yet while they were doing exactly what He instructed them to do, a violent storm arose. Waves crashed into the boat. Water filled the vessel. Fear filled their hearts.

Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep.

Can we be honest? Sometimes that’s exactly how life feels.

We pray, obey, trust God, and yet the storm still comes. We wonder why God seems silent. We question whether He sees what we’re facing. We ask ourselves, “Lord, don’t You care?”

The disciples asked a similar question:

“Teacher, don’t You care that we’re going to die?” (Mark 4:38)

Jesus stood, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Immediately the storm ceased.

But after addressing the storm around them, Jesus addressed the storm within them.

“Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40)

What a powerful reminder.

Sometimes God speaks to the storm.

Sometimes He speaks to us.

Sometimes He changes our circumstances.

Sometimes He changes our perspective.

Sometimes He removes the trial.

Sometimes He strengthens us to endure it.

Either way, His presence never leaves us.

Three Biblical Principles for Navigating Life’s Storms

1. God’s Presence Is Greater Than the Storm

The disciples were terrified because they focused on the waves instead of the One who was in the boat with them.

Fear often grows when we focus on our circumstances more than God’s character.

My sister, whatever storm you are facing today, Jesus is still in the boat. The situation may feel overwhelming, but His presence is greater than the problem.

Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him.

When fear rises, turn your thoughts back to the Savior.

2. Storms Reveal What We Truly Believe

Challenges have a way of exposing our trust level.

I’ve discovered that storms often force me into an honest examination of my faith. It’s easy to trust God when everything is going well. It’s another thing entirely to trust Him when prayers seem unanswered and circumstances remain unchanged.

Storms reveal whether we’re relying on God’s promises or our own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding.

The storm may test your faith, but it can also strengthen it.

3. Peace Is Found in the Savior, Not in the Situation

We often think peace comes when the problem disappears.

But biblical peace comes from the presence of Christ.

Jesus told His disciples:

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.” (John 14:27)

Notice He didn’t promise a storm-free life.

He promised His peace.

There are moments when God will calm the winds around you. There are also moments when He will allow the storm to continue while He fills your heart with supernatural peace.

Either way, He remains faithful.

Reflection

What storm are you facing today?

Has life happened?

Are fear, anxiety, disappointment, or uncertainty competing for your attention?

May I gently remind you today: turn your eyes back to Jesus.

If He chooses to calm the storm, trust Him.

If He chooses to calm you in the storm, trust Him.

The same Savior who spoke, “Peace, be still,” is still speaking peace over His children today.

And that peace is enough.

Prayer

Father, thank You that I never face life’s storms alone. Forgive me for the times I focus more on the waves than on You. Strengthen my faith and help me trust You completely. Whether You calm the storm around me or calm my heart within it, help me rest in Your presence and Your promises. Fill me with Your perfect peace today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

Are you asking God to remove the storm, or are you trusting Him to sustain you through it?

Now, let’s walk in freedom together!

Rhovonda
