Today’s Scripture is from Proverbs 19:17: “Mercy to the needy is a loan to God, and God pays back those loans in full.” (MSG)
I have this passage highlighted in my Bible app for multiple versions; however, I don’t remember reading this Scripture. It is a beautiful reminder to not forget about the people I see on the corners begging for food and money. I should reflect on God’s Word and be reminded that when I give to the poor, He promises to repay me in full. I cannot forget that last part, “…in full.”
We should show mercy to the needy. We should show them kindness (another version writes). Giving to them is like lending unto the Lord; God repays what He owes in full. So when I see someone in need, I should not question their motive, as I often do. But give like I am giving to the Lord. Because I am, according to Matthew 25: “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'” (v. 40, NLT)
The holiday seasons prompt most of us to give. On the other hand, many of us become even more selfish when we should be showing kindness and generosity to our brothers and sisters who are in need. As we count down to the last days of 2023 and begin making plans for the new year, let us not forget about the hungry, imprisoned, homeless, sick, and hurting. And whenever we encounter these individuals, may we remember Proverbs 19:17.
“One who is gracious to a poor person lends to the Lord. And He will repay him for his good deeds.” (NASB2020)

Merriam-Webster describes mercy as the compassionate treatment of those in distress and a blessing that is an act of divine favor or compassion. It involves showing compassion and kindness to those in need, especially those who may have wronged us. Here are three ways that we can show mercy to people who are in need.
- Demonstrate Mercy through Forgiveness: When someone has wronged us, one of the most impactful ways to show mercy is through forgiveness. The process of forgiving is challenging, requiring both courage and strength. However, it provides an opportunity for the offender to start anew and for us to demonstrate compassion. Forgiveness can heal wounds and repair damaged relationships.
- Demonstrate Mercy through Acts of Charity: Giving to less fortunate people is another way to show mercy. Charity can take many forms, such as donating money, food, clothing, or time. By giving to others, we are showing them that we care and that we are willing to help them in their time of need. Charity can also inspire others to be more generous and kind.
- Demonstrate Mercy through Understanding: Empathy is a powerful way to exhibit compassion. This involves putting ourselves in someone else’s position and grasping the range of their feelings and emotions. By showing empathy, we can establish a deeper connection with others and demonstrate that we care. This is particularly significant for those who are going through difficult times and need someone to talk to and support them.

It is natural to question the motives of others, especially those who are in need. However, it is important to recognize that everyone has their own unique circumstances and challenges, and it is not always easy to understand what someone else is going through.
- One way to overcome the tendency to question the motives of those in need is to practice empathy. This means putting yourself in their shoes and trying to understand their situation from their perspective. Ask yourself questions like, “What would I do if I were in their position?” or “What challenges might they be facing that I am not aware of?”
- Another helpful approach is to focus on the person’s needs rather than their motives. Instead of asking yourself why they are in need, ask yourself how you can help them. This shifts the focus from judgment to compassion and can help build a stronger connection with the person.
- Finally, it is important to recognize that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect, regardless of their circumstances. By approaching those in need with an open mind and a willingness to help, you can make a positive difference in their lives and your own.

Proverbs 19:17 states, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” This verse encourages us to be kind to the less fortunate and promises that God will reward us for our kindness. Here are some practical ways to remember this verse and apply it in your daily life:
- Help those in need: Look for opportunities to help those in need around you. It could be as simple as offering a hand to an elderly person, donating to a charity, or volunteering at a homeless shelter.
- Practice empathy: Try to put yourself in other people’s shoes and understand their struggles. This will help you to be more compassionate and kind towards them.
- Be grateful: Take time to appreciate the blessings in your life and be thankful for what you have. This will help you to be more generous towards others.
- Encourage others: Use your words to lift others up and build them up. Encouragement can go a long way in helping others feel valued and loved.
Remembering Proverbs 19:17 and applying it in your daily life can bring joy and blessings to you and those around you.
Happy New Year! May we set aside some time from our busy schedules to give our heavenly Father thanks as we reflect on His mercy and goodness toward us, and may we remember those less fortunate than us. They, too, require mercy and kindness.
Now, let’s walk in freedom together!
