How To Be A Proverbs 31 Woman

This month is Women’s History Month and this week we celebrated International Women’s Day. Today’s passage of Scripture goes perfectly with both occasions.

“Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised.” (Prov. 31:30 AMP)

“Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised.”

Proverbs 31:30 AMP

Have you read and studied Proverbs 31-10-31? It’s a beautiful text and remarkably written. Well, all of Scripture is. It is intriguing the way the author, who happens to be a man, describes this woman in great detail. From verses 10-31, King Lemuel paints a vivid picture of what a virtuous woman does, so I listed those characteristics.

As you read through each attribute, reflect, and ask yourself this question, Am I a Proverbs 31 woman?

Here’s what King Lemuel wrote about this noble woman:

  • She’s worth far more than jewels. (v.10)
  • Her husband trusts her completely and depends on her. (v.11a)
  • She gives her husband all the important things he needs. (v.11b)
  • She does good for her husband all her life. (v.12a)
  • She never causes him trouble. (v. 12b)
  • She shops around for the best yarns and cottons. (v. 13a)
  • She loves making things with her hands. (v. 13b)
  • She handles money carefully. (v. 14)
  • She’s a businesswoman who is clever at buying and selling, diligent, conscientious, and a good manager of the household. (14-16)
  • She works very hard. She is strong and able to do all her work. (v. 17)
  • She works late into the night to make sure her business earns a profit. (v. 18)
  • She is energetic and tireless, both in helping the family income and in carrying out household tasks. (17-19)
  • Though a good businesswoman, she is not callous. (v. 20)
  • She is not stingy but gives generous help to the poor and needy. (20)
  • She is generous towards her family. When making clothes she uses good cloth, so that all in her household look well dressed and, through her foresight, enjoy good protection when bad weather comes. (v. 21)
  • The respect that people have for her husband is due in large measure to her. (21-25)
  • Through her wise words, kindness, consideration, diligence and reverence for God, the family is uplifted. Her children and her husband delight in her and the community at large honors her. (26-31)

The Holy Spirit convicts me each time I read Proverbs 31; yet, I am more inspired. This passage of Scripture is an inspiration to every woman and girl, especially business owners, mothers, and wives. Proverbs 31 tells us exactly how to be a noblewoman and should empower us to walk boldly in our purpose, and humbly accept the gifts and power God has graciously given us so that we may make godly impacts, greatly influence, and change those around us, all in the name of the Lord.

Sis, when you have a chance, I urge you to read, study, and reflect on today’s passage of Scripture. Let us ask Jesus to show us how to be and live every day as a Proverbs 31 woman.
