A Rainbow: God’s Promise

12 Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. 13 I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth.”

Genesis 9:12-13 NLT

I stepped out of my house yesterday and saw a rainbow. The colors of a rainbow are brilliant and stunning, making a perfect painting in the heavenly skies. Rainbows are so beautiful to me. Every time I see one, it fills my heart with peace, joy, and comfort. Even though I am 51 years old, I always get excited like a child whenever I see a rainbow. Yesterday was no different.

Do you know why I love rainbows? Because it reminds me of God’s faithfulness. It reminds me that He keeps His promises. It reminds me that the Word of God is real, reliable, alive, and everlasting. Just like our Heavenly Father and Savior (Ps. 90:2).

“12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the [a]breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12)

Rainbows tell me that God loves me. God is thinking about me. God cares about me and what concerns me. Rainbows tell me that God hates sin, and He will deal with it accordingly.

“5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” (Gen. 6:5-8, NIV)

Rainbows tell me that amid God’s judgment, He is merciful. Wow!! Now, who is like the Lord? NO ONE! Not only that, but rainbows tell me that God is sovereign. He does what He wants to do, and when He wants to do it.

The rainbow is a covenant agreement or promise God made with His creation that He destroy the earth with a flood.

So on those days when I need to be reminded that God is a promise-keeper, has not forgotten about me or when I feel like I am in this thing along, I can think about the rainbow. When life is sucking all the joy and peace from me, the rainbow that God places in the sky is proof and all the encouragement I need to wait patiently on Him. A rainbow motivates me to keep trusting God and serving Him when life gets hard.

Sis, are you having a rough day? Wondering if God will answer you? Struggling to see past your storm? Let me encourage you to look for the rainbow. When you see the rainbow remember that God is merciful, present, able, loving, and faithful. He is your peace-giver and sovereign Lord. Walk in that truth today.

Sis, when you see a rainbow, what do you think of? What does a rainbow mean to you?

Your sis,

Rhovonda
